12–18 May 2025 | #RoadSafetyWeek #RethinkMobility
This May, the 8th UN Global Road Safety Week invites us to take meaningful steps—towards safer, healthier, and more liveable communities through active travel.
Walking and cycling are not only great for our health and the environment—they’re essential parts of a modern, efficient transport system. As cities grow and mobility demands increase, the need for accessible, safe options is more urgent than ever.
Unfortunately, too many people still face risks when simply getting around on foot or by bike. Every year, millions of lives are affected by road traffic crashes, with pedestrians and cyclists making up more than a quarter of global road traffic deaths. It’s a reminder that safety must be at the heart of how we design our streets and plan our transport networks.
This Week is About Action
Global Road Safety Week is a chance to inspire action at both national and local levels—to make walking and cycling safe, appealing, and accessible for everyone. It highlights practical steps that can be taken by governments, businesses, schools, international organisations, and communities.
These steps include:
Designing safer roads and crossings
Improving cycling infrastructure
Reducing traffic speeds where people walk and ride
Enhancing emergency response and care
These are all part of the Safe System approach recommended by the World Health Organization and partners like the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety.
The Bigger Picture
Promoting walking and cycling supports broader goals too—like improving public health, tackling climate change, reducing congestion, and boosting local economies. Active travel brings life to our streets, encourages community connection, and makes our neighbourhoods more vibrant and resilient.
Whether you’re a policymaker, business owner, parent, teacher or commuter, we all have a role to play in shaping a future where everyone can move safely.
- Share how you’re helping to make walking and cycling safer in your area
- Join local events, inspire others, and post your stories using #RethinkMobility
Together, we can build streets for life—and create a world where walking and cycling are not just possible, but the preferred and safest ways to travel.
