Ponteland Education and Leisure Campus
Brief Description
The development was for an education and leisure campus off Callerton Lane, promoted by Northumberland County Council as part of a change in the education provision in Ponteland from a 3-tier to a 2-tier system.
The proposed development would see the existing Ponteland leisure centre demolished and replaced by a new leisure facility integrated with a secondary school and a primary school for approx. 2,000 pupils.
SAJ Transport Consultants were invited to provide advice on change in traffic patterns and assess impacts on the surrounding road network.
Key Objectives
Undertaking a full multi-modal study by reviewing existing travel statistics for surrounding schools affected by the proposed change from a 3-tier to a 2-tier system.
Over 2,500 postcodes interrogated to establish mathematical models to calibrate existing data and predict likely change in travel behaviour, taking into account school catchments and the proposed change from a 3-tier to a 2-tier system.
Using the predicted modal changes to estimate the likely change in traffic patterns in Ponteland.
Further analysis to consider site interaction between the proposed education and leisure campus and the adjacent Clickemin residential development.
Outcomes
The multi-modal study showed that the proposed leisure and education campus would result in change in traffic patterns in Ponteland but would not have severe operational impacts on the surrounding road network.
The application received support from the highways officers at Northumberland County Council, contributing to planning approval.
