What is Mode Shift Month?
This September is Mode Shift Month—a nationwide campaign all about trying out different ways of getting around. Whether it’s walking, wheeling, cycling, catching the bus, hopping on the train, or even sharing a car journey, it’s a chance to see how small changes can make a big difference to your health, your wallet, and your community.
Why take part?
- Healthier living: Walking and cycling build activity into your day without needing the gym.
- Save money: Public transport and car sharing often cost less than driving alone.
- Cleaner air: Fewer cars on the road means less congestion and pollution in our towns and neighbourhoods.
- Less stress: Active and shared travel can make your commute or school run calmer and more enjoyable.
What’s happening this September?
Throughout the month, schools, businesses, and councils across the UK will be running fun activities, travel challenges, and local events to help people discover new ways to travel. You’ll also spot resources like pledge cards, scavenger hunts, and travel tips designed to make it easy to get involved.
And it’s not just about big commitments—even swapping just one or two car journeys a week for a walk, cycle, or bus ride makes a difference.
How you can get involved
- Try something new: Swap one of your regular car trips for walking, cycling, or public transport.
- Share your journey: Talk with colleagues, neighbours, or friends about your experience—it might inspire them too.
- Join in locally: Keep an eye out for events, challenges, and offers happening in your workplace, school, or community.
- Make it fun: Turn the school run into a walking adventure or try a “bike bus” with colleagues.
A movement for everyone
Mode Shift Month is about people, not policies. It’s about giving residents and employees the chance to see how small choices in everyday travel can add up to healthier, greener, and more connected communities.
So, this September, why not try to leave the car behind and see where a different mode of travel can take you?
