BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2026 – Travel Smart and Go Active

With BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend arriving at Herrington Country Park from 22–24 May 2026, residents are encouraged to think about active and sustainable travel options when heading to the festival.

With thousands of people expected to attend across the weekend, travelling on foot, by bike or using public transport will help reduce traffic, improve air quality and make journeys quicker and easier for everyone.

If you live nearby, walking or cycling to the event is a great option. Herrington Country Park is connected to a number of local walking and cycling routes, making it easy for residents to travel to and from the festival safely while avoiding busy roads and parking pressures.

Choosing active travel also means you can:

Avoid traffic congestion and road closures

Reduce your environmental impact

Enjoy a healthier and more enjoyable journey

Help keep local roads clear for emergency services and essential travel

Secure cycle parking and clearly signed pedestrian routes will help visitors reach the event safely. Festivalgoers are encouraged to plan their journey in advance and allow extra time, particularly during peak arrival and departure times.

Let’s make Big Weekend not only a fantastic celebration of music, but also a greener, healthier event for the whole community.

If you’re heading to the festival, consider walking or cycling where possible and help keep the North East moving.
