World Bicycle Day – 3 June

May 28th 2025

The humble bicycle is more than just a mode of transport — it’s a simple, affordable, and sustainable tool for healthier people and a healthier planet. That’s why we’re proud to join the global celebration of World Bicycle Day on 3 June, recognising the bicycle as a vehicle for change — in every sense of the word.

A Healthier Way to Move

Regular physical activity, such as cycling or walking, can dramatically improve our health. Just 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise helps to lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and even depression. The best part? You don’t need to run marathons — simply swapping short car journeys for a bike ride is enough to start making a difference.

According to the World Health Organization, some activity is always better than none — and cycling is one of the easiest, most accessible ways to build activity into daily life.

A Greener, Fairer Future

Cycling isn’t just good for your health — it’s also good for the world around us. Safe cycling infrastructure offers a pathway to greater health equity, especially for those in our communities who can’t afford private vehicles. For many, the bicycle provides reliable, low-cost access to jobs, education, health care, and social services.

By promoting cycling, we’re helping cities reduce emissions, improve air quality, and make streets safer. In fact, cycling is an essential part of the mobility solution as urban areas grow and face increasing pressure on their transport systems.

The Bicycle & Sustainable Development

World Bicycle Day highlights the positive impact the bicycle has on sustainable development, from reducing congestion and improving urban liveability to supporting climate action and reducing inequalities.

On 15 March 2022, the UN General Assembly formally recognised the importance of integrating cycling into public transport systems. The resolution emphasised that the bicycle fosters sustainable consumption and production and sends a strong message about the kind of future we want to build — clean, inclusive, and resilient.

A Symbol of Community & Peace

The bicycle is also a powerful symbol of community. Riding together promotes social inclusion, mutual understanding, and even mental well-being. From community bike rides to school cycling schemes, bicycles bring people together and create stronger, more connected places.

Join the Movement

On 3 June, we’re inviting everyone to celebrate the bicycle:

Ride your bike to work, school or the shops

Explore a local cycle path or nature trail

Share your cycling story on social media

Encourage family and friends to give cycling a go

Support local efforts for safer cycling infrastructure

Let’s turn the pedal towards progress — for people, for the planet, and for generations to come.
